Moving to China - Orientation Podcast #1
May 15, 2019 06:04 PM PDT
itunes pic

'So you've decided to move to China....what now??'

This is the first in a series of podcasts aimed at helping new members of staff and the extended community before/during and after their move to Shenzhen.

We will try to answer some of the key questions new members of the community will have about;

Housing - Campus/Off Campus
Medical - What to bring
Social Life - Bars/Restaurants/Sports

We will hear from singles, couples, couples with children, staff who live on campus, staff who live off campus so that you can get a wide and varied selection of information.

As with all our podcasts on #swisrocradio, they're pretty rough and off the cuff!

On this episode we hear from Brian and Lena who moved to SWIS from Mozambique with 18 cases of luggage.....and two young children. I don't envy them!

If you have specific questions that you would like answered please add them to the Google Doc (with some information about yourself!) that will be emailed to new staff this week.

We hope that we can help you in any way with your move to SWIS/Shenzhen/China and make the transition a little bit smoother with helpful information while attempting to make you laugh. ***Unfortunately Podcasts don't come with subtitles so if you can't understand an Irish accent maybe #swisrocradio is not the show for you!!***

This Podcast is recorded in Chinese; it was also recorded in English and can be accessed at;

The SWIS Webwise Parent Ambassador Group had their first Parent Presentation last Friday 19.04.2019 in the Theatre at SWIS.

This was their very first presentation and they did an amazing job. We had just over 60 SWIS parents in attendance which is a great start.

Joyce Ma, Qin Qin, Fei Fei and Santy Patel were the presenters.

此次讲座的家长特使们共有四位:Joyce Ma, Qin Qin, Fei Fei,和 Santy Patel 。

It was a workshop 'For Parents by Parents'.

In this podcast you will hear all about the roles and responsibilites of this group, why we meet, what we do and how you can join along to our monthly meetings.

在SWIS ROC电台中,您会了解到家长特使的角色和责任,我们为何成立家长特使、以及如何加入我们。

You will hear some tips and advice from the parents on both podcasts as well as some personal experiences from Santy and Joyce (in the English version in the link above).

All the Digital Citizenship resources are available to all parents on this Padlet;

It is our intention to set up a Digital Citizenship WeChat Subscription in the coming months for easier and faster access to resources.

In the podcast they talk about the need to focus on the quality of the Screen Time not the quantity and also on the 4'c of Innovation and Learning;

•Creativity and innovation创意创新

•Critical thinking批判思维

You can also find out more about technology at SWIS including STEM activities such as Coding&Robotics at https://innovation.swis.cn

The Harkness Method of Teaching by SWIS' Matt Manfredi
April 17, 2019 08:20 PM PDT

This morning at SWIS, Matt Manfredi from Long Island in New York was the guest on SWIS ROC Radio.

We hear a little bit of information about his family; his mother and father, Lois and Dante and his wonderful daughter, Kayley in Hanoi (who eats snails....).

Matt has been an educator for 18 years and it does not show in his youthful appearance!

On the 11&12th May at Level 5, Shekou, Matt will lead a workshop designed to explore the use of student-centered, discussion-based education described as the Harkness method. It’s a collaborative approach to problem solving and learning. This method was created and is used daily at Phillips Exeter Academy located in Exeter, New Hampshire. Phillips Exeter has been consistently ranked as one of the top ten best prep schools in America.

For more information and tickets; https://www.eventbrite.com/e/let-go-using-the-harkness-method-to-let-go-of-control-in-your-classroom-tickets-46641008512

It was enlightening listening to Matt explain the Harkness method in greater detail and it was very obvious that he is very passionate about it and is eager to share more details with the participants at the workshop.

Matt finally admits (we all knew) that his hero is Tina Turner. It was a fitting way to end the show.

We hope you enjoy the show and if you would like to find out more information about the Harkness method or if you'd like to meet Matt in person (?) then pop along to the INS department at SWIS Shenzhen https://www.swis.cn.

Finally, as mentioned on the show, well done to Spurs on their success last night against Man City (tough to say as an Arsenal Fan). We have two happy Spurs fans at SWIS today and one very unhappy Ringrose.

In the second part of the show we hear about the upcoming TEDx event at SWIS on the 23rd March at 11am. This is the very first TEDx event at SWIS after Jaikala secured a license for our school. It promises to be an amazing event.

The event will need school wide support and Jaikala is currently liaising with the Marketing, Logistics, Music, Design and IT Departments as well as the SLT to make this event a huge success. She is looking for volunteers to help out with the event. More information to follow after the Chinese New Year Holiday.

We hope you enjoy the show and that you will support Jaikala in making the TEDx event at SWIS an event to remember for years to come!

This afternoon we recorded an extra special Sports Podcast on SWIS ROC Radio.

What started out as an ordinary sports podcast, quickly descended in to an all out St.Patrick's Day show!

Pat Mustard (a famous Irish Character in the hit show Fr.Ted who actually died yesterday...RIP Pat) was played by our AD Josh Youngman.

We had Winnie from the MYP playing the role of Mrs Doyle (another character in this show ).

They both were on the show to speak about the sports department at SWIS and their excellent recent achievements.

Alongside, Pat and Mrs Doyle, was Emmet O' Halloran from Tulla in East Clare.

Emmet is the Product Design Teacher at SWIS and is a highly accomplished accordion player. He played a number of tunes on the accordion during the show.

We brought our own unique brand of Irish Humor to todays show. We hope you enjoy it.

This morning we raised 2400 for the Cambodia Orphanage at SWIS Shenzhen (www.swis.cn) in only 25 minutes through the sales of Irish Flags & Ribbons as well as face painting.

We will be out the front of school again selling and taking charity donations this afternoon.

To all the Irish at home and abroad we wish you an enjoyable St.Patrick's Weekend.

Stay safe, have fun and do us proud as always Ted!

The SWIS Model United Nations (MUN) Team

This afternoon we recorded an excellent podcast with the students and their supervisors from the MUN Team.

Mrs Maria Chaytor and Ms.April D

Our students Bhumija, Khushi, Jessie, Jessica from Grades 9-11 spoke excellently about the Model United Nations Conference that they attended last weekend in UISZ Guangzhou.

Bhumija - who is President of MUN at SWIS spoke passionately about topics such as Indigenous Rights that were debated during the conference.

We concluded the podcast with a very brief (far too brief) interview/interrogation of Ms.Dalbello and Mrs.Chaytor who gave us some background information about themselves.

We hear the heart warming...story of how Mrs.Chaytor met and fell in love with Mr.Robert Chaytor....many, many, many years ago!

We hope you enjoy the show!
